Willow Park Lodge

Willow Park Lodge

From its conception, we have been closely involved in shaping the interior design of the Observatory Retirement Village, challenging conventional retirement living aesthetics and replacing outdated hues with a contemporary colour palette grounded in the surrounding landscape.

The interior design of the new Willow Park Lodge draws directly from its North Otago setting. Colour cues were taken from the lush green gardens of Willow Park, the limestone architecture of the original homestead, and the warm, grounded tones of the surrounding landscape.

Inspired by the recent renovation of Willow Park, the scheme incorporates rich materiality through the use of dark timbers, fluted glass, and natural tiling, creating a sense of depth, warmth, and quiet sophistication. Central to the design was a confident use of colour: a deep green anchors the main lounge and kitchen spaces, earthy terracotta brings warmth and energy to the games room, while fresh sea-inspired tones create a calm, restorative atmosphere in the gym and spa.

Mixed materials of tartans in furniture and lighting, soft leathers in seating and the use of local photographer Emma Willetts prints bring the scheme together.

To soften and articulate the scale of the building, wall panelling was introduced along the main hallways, breaking up the vast circulation spaces while referencing the character and rhythm of heritage homes.

The result is a cohesive, contemporary interior that feels both grounded in place and deeply considered for the people who live there.
